Story Behind My Topic

The education of art has been in schools as long as we can all remember. Painting each other's faces, getting messy with clay, masks made from newspaper, and drawing with color were all some of our assignments. My small cousins now do not have near the experience I have. Funds are being cut and programs I once had are no longer available to the younger generations. They have to bring their own art supplies to class and don’t get half of the fun activities I did. Students are losing the fine arts to the “essential” classes of English and Mathematics.  Within the next decade, these cognitive classes may be completely removed from our educational system; however there is hope. Programs have created after school programs and petitions to help the cause of freedom to express through art. These classes create friendly environments and have fun memories with paint and pencils. As an active painter and artist, art education holds importance to me. My art teacher, Mr. James Gorcesky, was always struggling to fund the projects we did in class. This shouldn’t be happening. In the words of Diego Rivera, “I’ve never believed in God, but I believe in Picasso.”

  2. I really love your topic. I do not understand why art is being taken out of schools, when it is an outlet for student’s minds and contributes to their mental health. It is a necessary part of school because it exercises the right part of the brain and that is basically what school is; exercising and developing student’s brains. I hate that my high school does not have the art classes a normal school would have, it always drives me crazy. I want my school to have art too because it calms me down, I can only relax with an art pencil in my hand and music drumming in my ears. I wish that everyone would be able to study the arts and let their imaginations grow; I am tired of some kids not even having opinions on art because of a lack of exposure. I think art would calm students and give them an outlet from their stress and agitation for school. I hope that future generations of students will be able to correctly experience the arts.

  3. I would have to agree with Enxhi when she says she doesn't understand why they are taken art out of schools. It is a fun class and it gives kids a chance to express themselves. When they don't have this opportunity to create a way to tell you how they feel, they will find other ways and sometimes its not always good. This is a good topic and i can't wait to see where it goes.
